128 people were killed in the disaster. It was very nearly a disaster. While at its Chicago port the ship tipped over killing 844 people.
11-day Christmas cruise carrying a total of 646 passengers and 376 crew. The ship drifted to within 100 metres of running aground before they were able to restart one of the engines police. In 1975 she was rebuilt as a cruise ship and subsequently sailed under the names Calypso Azure Seas and OceanBreeze until 2003 when she was sold for scrap to Ahmed Muztaba Steel Industries.
All 41 crew rescued by Royal Air Force and Royal Navy helicopters. All crew rescued by San Carlo Italy. The PA system wasnt working properly on the boat but the safety officer ran downstairs to survey the damage.
