Canberra cruise ship. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast Northern Ireland at a cost of 17 million. Decommissioned in 1947 the CANBERRA was reclassified CAG 2 in January 1952 and subsequently underwent conversion to a guided missile heavy cruise at New York Shipbuilding Corp Camden NJ. In 1974 however Canberra underwent a major refit in which she was permanently converted into a one-class ship more in keeping with her developing role as a cruise ship. Initially named PITTSBURGH but later renamed CANBERRA the ship was commissioned as a BALTIMORE - class heavy gun cruiser.
The ship was named on 17 March 1958 after the federal capital of Australia Canberra. Among her passengers were many repeaters as the ship was known for her friendly atmosphere. Canberra was our second cruise and despite the age of the ship we loved the cruise which was to the Canaries.
Over the ensuing years she established a solid reputation with her predominantly British passengers cruising from the UK until fate propelled her into the history-books in a most unexpected manner. This is to introduce Canberra a ship destined for greatness. Returning from the Falklands war.
